For Submaterial, this year has been about networking and outreach. Throughout the year, we have been initiating donations to many important causes, both financially and through material donation. We have also been making conscious effort to get to know designers in the community. This effort includes reaching out for collaboration opportunities and holding an open house last September.

Doggie Dash Event

Parallel to this effort, we are excited to have had the opportunity to participate in the 35th Annual Doggie Dash & Dawdle. The Doggie Dash is a 5k run, where owners can bring their best k9 friend as a running partner. The Dawdle is an easier way to participate, where participants walk one mile with their four-legged friends. Submaterial was proud to sponsor all employees who registered by covering their registration fees of $35 per person, where all proceeds support the local Animal Humane shelter.

In the time surrounding the 5k and the walk at the Balloon Fiesta Park, there are pet friendly events including paw painting, bobbing for treats, and even dog yoga.

About Animal Humane

Animal Humane is a New Mexico non-profit organization, partnering with shelters throughout the state to care for homeless pets. Pets are often placed in foster homes for care until healthy enough for adoption into a forever home.  In addition to foster homes, Animal Humane also has a shelter with state-of-the-art facilities. With a 90% save rate, it is clear that their approach is working. Animal Humane does not give animals a time limit for adoption, and does not believe euthanasia is the answer to a pet awaiting adoption.

Because Submaterial is an animal advocate and we especially love our dogs, the Doggie Dash and Dawdle is a perfect way for us to contribute to pets across New Mexico. Learn more about donation opportunities here.

Our Participants

This year, we had four employees run the 5k with their pets, seven employees walk to Dawdle, and three employees volunteer throughout the event. One of our 5k participants won first place in the category of running “without a furry friend.”

For people who do not have a pet to bring, Animal Humane offers a “rent a dog” service, which is a wonderful way to let everyone participate in the event and helps increase pet adoption rates. In fact, one employee took advantage of this option with Chloe, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix.  Her charm made many of us wish we were in the market for another pet.  Visit Animal Humane’s website to view her adoption profile. (if link isn’t working, she found a home!)

Sub-Woofer Dog Calendar

To further our support of our beloved pets, Submaterial is putting together a Sub(material)-Woofers Dog Calendar. We have taken photos of dogs around our studios, with felt wallcovering backgrounds, and designed a desk calendar. We will have these calendars available in our online store in time for the holidays, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a cause benefiting local animals. More information about this project will be available in the coming weeks. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to follow along with our work and community involvement.
