Women in Design (WiD)

Women in Design is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to supporting women in the design industry. The New Mexico Chapter hosts the Annual Holiday Design Competition & Auction, where original wreaths and ornament sets are sold via silent auction, and proceeds this year benefit Susan’s Legacy.  In addition, many items are raffled throughout the evening, including; coffee gift cards from Little Bear Coffee, a Submaterial Wall Panel, spa packages, furniture, jewelry from Oropopo, and many more.

All wreaths and ornament sets are made by local designers from various design backgrounds.

Wreath Designs

Collaboration with FBT Architects

Last year, Submaterial donated two wool felt Wall Panels for the raffle. This year, we donated one large Myth Wall Panel and partnered with FBT Architects to design a felt wreath and ornament set.

Rathi from FBT Architects saw one of our prototypes and had the idea to turn it into a green and red felt wreath. Submaterial took on the fabrication of the wreath and we ended up with a beautiful piece incorporating a coiled and notched design language. The wreath was titled “Top-Notch.”

Wreaths and Ornaments

The ornament set was made using a light gray felt, stitched carefully to create snowflake forms.

As we’ve been becoming more active in the local design community, we’ve realized how influential the WiD group is. They’re heavily involved in local events, and it has been a pleasure getting to know the members of this group.
