WALL ART

Perhaps more than any other offering, our wall art collection demonstrates the precise hand-work and vibrant interplay of color, texture, and form that has become the Submaterial standard.

For our wall panels, natural materials such as wool felt, cork, leather, metal, and wood are worked with skill and craftsmanship to produce durable wall art that often features an additional and highly beneficial layer of acoustic dampening. The deeply textured surfaces and engaging patterns can add a warm, rich visual focus to any residential space. Custom panels can be created in a single color or a varied colorway; the look is up to you!

For our wall hangings, it is all about connections. Modular pattern elements are fashioned individually and then connected creating a detailed and dimensional whole. Fabricated in soft, tactile materials such as leather and Ultrasuede, or colorfully variegated cork, the wall hangings almost beg to be touched.

MOLLY ZIMMER + SUBMATERIAL
Limiting our environmental impact is one of our deepest-held values. It drives our decision to work exclusively with natural, sustainable, and renewable materials. We care about the sustainable creation of these materials before they arrive in our New Mexico studio. Equally important to us is the reuse and recycling of the scraps we create in our manufacturing process. For years we have provided materials to local artists and artisans. Molly Zimmer is an Albuquerque multimedia artist and textile restorer of Diné weavings who has been utilizing Submaterial felt offcuts in her practice for several years.

This collection of beautiful vessels by Molly Zimmer highlights transformation, not only the transformation of the rolls of felt into our products and resulting offcuts into works of biophilic art but also the transformations of a garden in the spring—the growth of stems, the emergence of monarch butterflies, and the unfurling of leaves. Much as gardens are a place for rest, rejuvenation, and sanctuary, these works bring that same calming spirit into residential spaces.

mirrors designed with neutral gray wool felt edging in circle square rectangle pill shapes lean against a wall above a cabinet
MIRRORS
After years of designing wall coverings and panels, it was a natural progression for Submaterial to devise a series of mirrors for the home. The perfect marriage of form and function, our Wander Mirror collection has simple, clean lines and a modern feel. The ribbed effect of the wool felt strips turned on edge creates a deep texture that frames the contours of the mirror glass inserts. Each Wander mirror invites you to picture yourself surrounded by its stylish geometry.

Screens
Our homes have become multifunctional over the last few years. What was once merely a guest room is now an office for two. The kitchen table is a 3rd-grade classroom. With these increased and varied activities, our homes require new furnishings. Flexible space-organizing options that are practical and aesthetically pleasing are key. Submaterial’s new Divvy collection of elegant and airy screens works to define your personal space without confining it. And perhaps most importantly, the sound-dampening qualities of the materials used, wool felt and cork, provide acoustic separation.

OBJECTS
Since the early days of Submaterial, we have played with creating small sculptural objects that referenced natural forms, from pinecones to trees. We have also tested the waters with functional home items that double as beautiful decor. These works explore the territory between objects of art and objects of design.

About Us
From its start in 2006 in the rain-drenched Pacific Northwest to our current sun-soaked New Mexico studio, Submaterial has always focused on natural and sustainable materials such as wool felt, cork, wood, and leather. These materials are fashioned by hand into beautifully textured wall art, wallcoverings, panels, screens, and more by our skilled fabricators using environmentally conscious and lean manufacturing processes. We create beautiful and responsibly produced designs for human spaces while supporting the humans who made them.
