We are thrilled to announce the Habitat Collection!  A new venture into e-commerce for the studio, these wall art and mirrors are available now! Developed with a smaller size and more accessible price point in mind, the five pieces of this collection are nonetheless designed and fabricated with the same Submaterial ethos of handmade in America, a graphic, modern design language, and a focus on sustainable materials. Each piece in this initial launch is 12” by 12”, and a limited amount was produced at this introductory pricing.

For over a decade, Submaterial has created large-scale dimensional wool felt wall coverings for commercial clients, adding meticulously crafted, colorful, and natural sound softening to lobbies, offices, banks, and commercial spaces nationwide. Since 2019, the company’s residential collection has grown steadily, including wall panels, wall hangings, room dividers, mirrors, and accessories. Submaterial recently exhibited at ICFF in New York for the first time and plans to return in 2025.

The studio has extensive experience working with clients and designers to create beautiful custom decor for their homes. Still, they also understand that only some have the space or means to consider a large, made-to-order wall art piece.

Juxt Mirror

Here are a few details about each of the designs. Nove is the Portuguese word for nine. This wall art panel celebrates the beauty, provenance, and sustainability of one of the studio’s favorite materials: cork, which can be harvested every nine years from the Portuguese cork forests. The Circadian No. 2 panel dances with color and rhythm, layering recurring colors in staggered rows within a cradle of powder-coated aluminum. Playing off the on-edge felt and narrow vertical color bands of our classic Myth panel, the Myth Flat turns the felt on its face while scaling up the bands of color. Vertex No. 2 celebrates our love of simple, bold shapes. This wall panel’s visual language is created by rotating, mirroring, and joining angular fields of wool felt, resulting in a piece that is both gestural and graphic. And the Juxt Mirror is a playful study of adjacency. The juxtaposition of materials, shapes, and colors creates a simple, fun, and functional mirror.

In addition to the e-commerce venture, Submaterial is also interested in offering these designs to modern design shops and hospitality interior designers. The design, development, and fabrication of the Habitat Collection makes these designs perfect for ordering at scale. More interesting than a landscape or cityscape painting or print, more dimensional than a black and white photograph, and more inviting in tone and texture than glass or metal wall art, these designs are a surprising yet modern decorative choice.
