Founder and Owner

DAVID HAMLIN

In 2006, when Submaterial was in its infancy, I remember feeling frustrated at the dissonance between my desire to make things by hand and what I saw as the demands of running a successful business. On the one hand, there was the gravitational pull of craftsmanship, connecting Submaterial to a long lineage of makers focused on a one-at-a-time, incremental kind of production, and on the other hand, there was the stark pressure of profitability faced by manufacturers.

These questions and desires drove us to create something truly special. We are committed to large-scale manufacturing and production using a handmade studio model. . I’m proud of the work we have done to prove that you can have a successful business, pay a living wage, and provide benefits, all with hand-made products.

Despite the initial frustration, that tension between handcraft and manufacturing at scale has become one of our greatest strengths.

Creative Collaboration

It has been my great pleasure and honor to steward Submaterial through all
the stages of its growth since 2006.

As the company grew in staff, I always looked for people I believed had
potential. Even if they didn’t have the education, background, or skill in the
field, when I saw potential, I wanted to cultivate and encourage it.

Over the years, people have come in and added their unique perspectives, making the studio better. This is an organization where a single personality can make a huge impact.

Through the creativity and innovation of our team, we have created award-winning products that are now specified by the world’s top architecture and interior firms.

Healthy and Sustainable Business

If I look at what I set out to do with Submaterial, I have succeeded beyond my expectations. Our first large-scale project was made in my 200 sq. ft. cottage. Today, we fabricate multiple similar projects weekly in a 35,000 sq. ft studio. We have 30 hardworking staff and many new opportunities and prospects for growth.

As Owner and Founder, I have worked with the smartest business team anyone could ask for. I am profoundly grateful. As I am passing the design and business reins to a new generation at Submaterial, I have nothing but the greatest confidence that our company will continue to thrive under their guidance.

Looking Ahead

As of January 1, 2025, I have retired as Creative Director at Submaterial. For any business leader, stepping down from the role is a monumental and long-considered decision and a huge personal change.

My attention now turns to a new creative venture: Hamlin Studio, a printmaking and sculpture practice where I find that I am at the beginning all over again…the best place to be.
